The Legalization of Sports Betting

If you’re a sports bettor, you’ve probably heard about the legalization of sports betting in some states, such as New Jersey and North Carolina. But what about states like Tennessee and Minnesota? There are several factors to consider when placing your bets. Here’s a quick overview of the laws pertaining to sports betting.

Legalization of sports betting in New Jersey

After decades of debate, the state of New Jersey has approved the legalization of sports betting. The bill was passed unanimously by the New Jersey Assembly and Senate on June 14, 2018. The following month, New Jersey’s Borgata and Monmouth Park opened their retail sports betting operations, with online sports betting to follow in early August.

New Jersey’s online sportsbooks allow players to place wagers on their favorite sporting events using a credit card. However, operators are prohibited from accepting wagers on college games in the state. However, there are efforts underway to reverse the ban.

Legalization of sports betting in North Carolina

There is still a long way to go before North Carolina legalizes sports betting. Although the Senate approved SB 688 last fall, it has not yet passed the House due to the heated debate surrounding the legislation. The bill has yet to pass the full House, but it has passed the House Rules Committee. The full House is expected to take up the bill in May 2022.

Sports betting is legal in more than 30 states and can be conducted online, on mobile devices, or in retail settings. In North Carolina, however, it is only legal on tribal lands. The state’s two Native American casinos have already agreed on a sportsbook operating agreement. The sportsbooks will operate in conjunction with the state’s two casinos and will have the ability to offer sports betting to residents in North Carolina.

Legalization of sports betting in Tennessee

The legalization of sports betting in Tennessee has been a long process. It started with the Tennessee Education Lottery Corporation carefully crafting the sports betting laws, and was officially launched in November 2020. Through May of 2022, the Tennessee Education Lottery Corporation reported a handle of $261.6 million, and has consistently exceeded the $200 million mark each month. Additionally, the state has already raked in over $23 million in taxes.

Although legalization of sports betting in Tennessee has been in the works for a few years, the state is still a “non-gaming” state and does not have casinos or brick-and-mortar retail casinos. Currently, the only legal sports betting establishments in Tennessee are online and through mobile apps. The new state law requires the TN Education Lottery Corporation to monitor legal sports betting operators. Four sports betting operators went live on Nov. 1, and several more have since been added.

Legalization of sports betting in Minnesota

There are a number of hurdles to overcome before the state of Minnesota legalizes sports betting. First, the state must find a way to ensure that tribes and other stakeholders support the idea. Second, the state must pass legislation that offers incentives to tribes to participate. Finally, legalizing sports betting requires bipartisan support in the legislature, which is controlled alternately by Democrats and Republicans.

The Minnesota Legislature has already seen multiple attempts to legalize sports betting, but none have made it to the floor. This is largely due to anti-gambling sentiment among legislators, and the opposition of tribal nations to the concept. Additionally, the state’s tribal compacts grant the tribes almost total authority over gambling in the state.
